When I founded Urban Table Works in 2011, the goal was simple – design and build distinctive, clean-lined tables (and other furniture).
Applying the concept of sustainability to furniture is what Urban Table Works is all about.
With all the choices out there, I wanted to offer something different – rather I needed to offer something different. First, they had to be solid wood, no veneers, no MDF, no particle board. Did you ever notice how heavy that stuff is? I’d much rather move a solid oak dresser than one made with oak veneer over MDF or particle board. Aside from that, if solid furniture gets nicked, dinged, damaged or needs refinishing, it can be repaired without the worry of sanding through the paper thin veneer.
But that was only part of the equation. Secondly, it had to be handcrafted. Furniture that is handcrafted is built to last. It won’t be something that is thrown away, or put in a rummage sale after a few years because it just didn’t hold up. But if you’re looking for solid handcrafted furniture, you probably have found many great choices out there. Perhaps there was be more to the equation.
What about green, sustainable, eco-safe furniture?
A sustainable table? What does that mean? Well, you may use compact fluorescent or LED light bulbs, and turn the thermostat down a little in the winter or up in the summer. You may have bought energy efficient appliances, or a car with better gas mileage. And maybe you use environmentally-friendly cleaners and try to buy organic locally-grown food. But green, sustainable, eco-safe furniture? Really?
Applying the concept of sustainability to furniture is what Urban Table Works is all about. We continually strive to minimize our impact on the environment, to keep it safe and healthy, and to use materials that do not deplete natural resources, in particular FSC certified bamboo. Bamboo is durable (similar in hardness to oak) and can be made into beautiful furniture. We also offer eco-safe stains and finishes with low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Our tables not only reflect urban living in their sustainability, but their distinctive style and clean lines reflect living in a sophisticated, vibrant urban environment.
So…what about green, sustainable, eco-safe furniture?
